One rental. Two islands.

Qualifying four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles can travel with you from St. Thomas to St. John on the car ferry — luggage, cooler and schedule intact.

First things first

Confirm eligibility before you plan around it.

Eligibility depends on the rental class, not the badge on the grille. Ask us to confirm your specific vehicle when you book — it is the single most important item on the list.

Vehicle eligibility depends on the rental class. Confirm St. John eligibility when booking. We cannot guarantee a specific vehicle or colour.

Before you go

Five things to sort out

  • Confirm your vehicle class is eligible for the car ferry
  • Check the car ferry schedule and fares directly with the operator — it runs separately from us
  • Allow extra travel time for queueing, loading and unloading
  • Keep your rental agreement with you
  • Follow the ferry crew's instructions on the ramp
Why bring your rental

Worth the crossing

  • Keep your luggage in one vehicle
  • Explore the beaches on your own schedule
  • Reach trailheads and restaurants independently
  • Avoid arranging a second rental on the other side

If you are making a single short day trip and are happy using taxis on the other side, the passenger ferry may suit you better. Ask us — we will tell you honestly which makes more sense.

Vehicle recommendations

Classes that commonly qualify.

These four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive classes are the ones we most often approve for St. John. Availability varies by date, and eligibility is confirmed at booking — this is a starting point, not a guarantee.

Vehicle make, model, colour, trim and features may vary. A comparable vehicle in the same rental class may be substituted.

On the other side

Driving on St. John.

  • Roads are steeper and narrower than St. Thomas in places, with sharp switchbacks on the north shore
  • Traffic drives on the left here too
  • Parking at the popular beaches fills early — go in the morning
  • Use a low gear on long descents rather than riding the brakes
  • Rain makes steep sections genuinely slick

Stay on established roads

Virgin Islands National Park covers a large part of St. John. Driving on trails or off established roadways is not permitted. These are road vehicles — please keep them on the road.
